Picking out a Bridesmaid Dress

I will be the florist AND matron of honor in my beautiful sister’s wedding in August. She is marrying the sweetest, most uplifting and respectable guy in the world (besides my wonderful hubby). Jenny-lyn is a girly girl just like me, and definitely wants pink (bright fuchsia and softer shades) to be the color of the day, accented by clean black and white details. Sounds fab! Even more fab is the fact that she’s letting us all pick out our own bridesmaids’ dresses. All 5 of her bms have completely different body types, styles, and budgets. I’m by far the shrimpiest and perhaps the most girly of the group. I’m willing to splurge a bit on the dress, since I will most certainly wear it again.

Me and my sis. No, we're not twins! I'm the shorter one with the lighter hair in case you are wondering.

Me and my sis. No, we're not twins! I'm the shorter one with the lighter hair in case you are wondering.

The only rules Jenny-lyn gave us:

  • Must be conservative enough to wear in a church for the ceremony.
  • Must be black (Yay! Totally rewearable!)
  • Must be cocktail length.
  • Must be thicker fabric, like satin (nothing too flimsy or flirty).

With these guidelines in mind, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect little black dress. Here are some of the contenders:

This Tadashi number is soooo cute, but is the lace on the chest a little too risque? Tadashi via Bloomingdales.

This one is the most "me", but the fabric might not be sturdy enough for my sis's approval. We'll see. Anne Klein via Bloomingdales.

Sooo stinkin' cute, but too short. I'm a little shy when it comes to exposing my knees. My legs are not my forte.

I've never rocked a one shoulder dress, but I wouldn't mind giving this one a whirl. ABS via Bloomingdales.

#6. I've never rocked a one shoulder dress, but I wouldn't mind giving this one a whirl. Wish it was a little longer! ABS via Bloomingdales.

Last but not least, this amazing satin frock by Keemia. In black, it would be simply gorgeous. Keemia via Revolve Clothing.

#7. Last but not least, this amazing satin frock by Keemia. In black, it would be simply gorgeous. Keemia.

I’m leaning toward 1,2,4, and 7. Which one do you prefer? Have you spotted any other little black dresses that I should check out? Thanks for your help!

As soon as I saw #4, I thought “that looks like Kris!” I can definitely see you in it.

They are all cute options though.

WOW! Congrats to your sister, that’s great news!
My personal fave is #3 … it wouldn’t be too sexy as long as cleavage isn’t busting out everywhere. But #7 is also very chic! What a fun post… I feel like I just went eye shopping and spent 1/1000th the time 🙂

  5. Heidi @ Zenadia Says:

I actually like #3 too!! All of them are so cute though. Such fun to be able to pick your own dress!

LOL this blog post rocks! Ok, yes, you are correct about number 4 (too light in the material – I want something more sturdy!) and my favs are 1, 2, 3, and 7! I actually LOVE 3 with the lacy top! I dont mind that it is a bit sexy! I want my BMs to look rediculously HOT and eye-catching! Fake eyelashes and BIG hair if you want!

PS. I love your blogs you are the cutest.
PPS. James and I are getting our engagement pics done this Friday! He is scrumptuously hot!!!

Jen, you are gonna be the funniest pastor’s wife in the world. Big hair and eyelashes? I thought you wanted us to look demure and conservative! But if that’s what you want, I will oblige 🙂 I’m going to bloomingdales soon to try all these on. Thanks for the recs!

What a fun blog. I’ll weigh in on the “older” view. #7 with the off the shoulder on both sides. So attractive, feminine and will be worn over and over in so many occasions. #3 is my second choice. I think that is a very good idea of Jennylyns to have each pick out what best fits their shape and style!
